Resumo inglês:This research studies the “APA da Serra da Piedade” creation and management, in Visconde do Rio Branco/MG and the social participation in these processes. It verified if the area is considered by the population as a historical-environmental patrimony, which should be preserved. It analyzed the collective representations and the actors’ memory involved into it, starting from a qualitative approach and adopting the exploratory and descriptive focus. The methodology used to collect data is based on the oral history, bibliographical and documental research, as the techniques of observation and the application of semi-structured questionnaires with informers of the urban and rural area of Santa Maria e Piedade de Cima at Visconde do Rio Branco municipal district. Starting from the paths and historical risings accomplished in this research, it could be noticed that the population’s non participation and the consequent unawareness of the UC’s creative process and management, as the inadequate legislations contributed for its abandonment and the lack of effective actions for its preservation. Besides, the APA’s area is not relevant to the “traditional urban population’s” memory, which difficult the social actors involvement in preservation initiatives. However, some APA’s areas are still used as “memory places” of these population, which signifies that a heritage education , with governmental and non-governmental institutions allied with a Oral History project will rescue and value the historical-environmental patrimony and contribute to the APA’s preservation and its recognition as a local patrimony.
