Resumo inglês:The objective of this study was to compare reproductive features of two bred male goats, Alpine (n=4) and Saanen (n=4), after artificial light treatment in two periods: period 1 (first 15 days) and period 2 (16 to 40 days). Young (11.7 months, n=4) and adults (58 months, n=4). After light treatment, sexual behavior, scrotal perimeter (PE), seminal features and freezability of semen by means of, thermo-resistance (TTR), hypoosmotic swelling (HOST) and acrossomal integrity test at each 48 h. Young animals showed lower time (27.0 s) than adults (62.0 s; P < 0.05). The PE differed between ages (P < 0.05) and the young Saanen had bigger PE than the young Alpine (28.7 cm versus 27.3 cm; P < 0.05). The PE increased from 30.53 cm in period 1 to 31.53 cm in period 2 in all groups (P < 0.05). Alpine bucks had better seminal quality than Saanen bucks, and young animals presented superior seminal features than adults (P < 0.05): motility (87.5% ± 7.5 and 84.7% ± 7.5 for Alpine, and 85.0% ± 7.7 and 73.6% ± 11.9 for Saanen), mass movement (4.5 ± 0.6 and 3.9 ± 0.6 for Alpine, and 4.5 ± 0.5 and 2.6 ± 1.3 for Saanen), vigor (4.9 ± 0.3 and 4.9 ± 0.3 for Alpine, and 4.8 ± 0.5 and 4.5 ± 0.7 for Saanen) and major defects (4.9 ± 2.6 and 7.2 ± 4.2 for Alpine, and 6.5 ± 5.0 and 17.4 ± 17.5 for Saanen). Alpine breed semen presented better freezability than Saanen, and young were superior than adults in TTR (P < 0.05). Heat stress affected membrane integrity of spermatozoa (P < 0.05). After freezing-thawing, membrane integrity decreased less intensively in young than in adult animals (10.7 and 17.9%, respectively) (P < 0.05). Artificial light treatment was efficient to reestablish reproductive activity. Saanen bucks were more sensible to effects of season and photoperiod than Alpine bucks, and young animals had better quality and freezability than adults out of the reproductive season.
