Resumo inglês:In Brazil, the implementation of the colonization nuclei was began at the end of the 30-ies, as one of the strategies for agricultural development. Many programs were established to promote the rural development, among which is the colonization nucleus in Paracatu, actually the Brasilândia de Minas county located in Minas Gerais State. This nucleus was implemented by the Government in 1952 through the Vale do São Francisco Committee San Francisco (CVSF), to whom the administration of this nucleus was assigned until its emancipation. The effectiveness and viability of the several implemented colonization nuclei. So, the purpose of this study (a case study) was to elaborate a diagnosis on the actual situation of this colonization nucleus, more specifically to characterize the profiles of the producers and properties and the levels of the rural producers’ life quality, as well as to identify some aspects related to agricultural production, commercialization system, rural credit, and employment. The study was based on the modernization theory (considered one of the models for agricultural development) and the regional economical development theory as well. The field research was carried out in the rural community of Brasilândia de Minas county, located on northwestern Minas Gerais. In conducting the study, on sample constituted by 104 rural producers randomly selected was determined. The data collection was performed by application of questionnaires through direct interview with the owners of the visited establishments. A number of data were also collected dates in some institutions, as well as in the County City hall. The data were estimated by table analysis (considering the relative frequency of the obtained data) and determination of the growth geometric rate, in such a way to identify the evolution of milk production in the region. The obtained results allowed the following conclusion: although a substantial development has been registered in the region due to expansion of the agricultural activity, therefore the establishment Brasilândia de Minas county, the levels of the producers’ education and income are quite low (this situation has characterized the colonization nuclei where the rural development through implantation of small properties is proposed). A number of producers has foresaw the abandonment of the agricultural activity in the case the current situation prevails, mainly for those whose income proceeds from milk production. The decapitalization tendency occurs in the rural sector due to low profitability. To expand the economical activity, this county should search further alternative sources for development.
