The aim of the current work is to discuss the conceptions and functions of art in the formation and performance of the art therapist. Based on the historic-cultural conjecture of dialectic materialism of the so called Russian school in Liev Semionovich Vigotski, privileging the subjective construction and comprehension of the inter and intrapsychic procedures, generators, in Art and psychology, of the creative human action, complex, singular, objectifies of the production of varied forms of art. Redemption of the History and Art was thought important as a subsidy for the discussions of the conceptions and functions of the Arte in the formation and performance of the art therapist. The redemptions of these conceptions in the History of Art pointed out the need to seek knowledge, in Nise de Silveira also, his or her comprehension on the use of artistic expressiveness as a facilitated way of the therapeutic procedure. All of these preceding theoretics were fundamental to aid the discussions of the theoretical proposals as Art in art therapy and of these with the experimental research performed by professionals in the area. An investigation was installed of the conceptions and functions of Art for the art therapist in his or her performance, which acknowledged the need for formation more founded on the theory of Art and the artistic practice. This work conciliated a reflection on the formation of the art therapist citing a referential founded on the varied theoretic ranks of Psychology, summarizing the knowledge of Art to experiences of practical activities. This research indicated fundamentally the priorization of Analytic Psychology in the analysis of images produced in Technical and instrumental exercise of the artistic, practice and still the use of references of self-aid. Accordingly this research has verified the need for a more critical reflection and a theoretical revision of the specialization courses in art therapist, who, in declining his formation in Art, makes his practice undistinguished regarding the other therapists.
