Resumo: [pt] Promovendo uma aproximação entre História e Fotografia, ao tomar a imagem fotográfica como fonte histórica e, por conseguinte, produtora de conhecimento histórico, esta dissertação parte da análise das imagens que Kurt Klagsbrunn – austríaco de ascendência judaica que se radicou no Brasil juntamente com sua família em 1939, escolhendo o Rio de Janeiro como sua morada e tendo nela se profissionalizado fotógrafo – realizou da cidade durante o decênio compreendido entre 1940 e 1950. Partindo do desenvolvimento da fotografia, enquanto técnica e prática, como uma das conquistas da modernidade, passando pelas matrizes estéticas que forjaram o olhar do jovem Kurt ainda na Europa e, por fim, deitando detidamente o olhar sobre suas imagens, analisarei a forma como o fotógrafo expressou as tensões políticas, sociais e culturais de uma sociedade que se por um lado aspirava ares de modernidade, por outro, contraditoriamente, não escondia seus contrastes.
