Resumo: The goal of the study was to identify and discuss variables, and the relationship among them, that played a significant role in the success in developing oral language of a hearing impaired teenager with progressive loss. The case was analyzed in two different perspectives: clinical and therapeutic considering language, audiological and school aspects and also the family perception of this process during the same period of time. Aiming at a thorough and profound description of the process, two different types of data were used: examination of the files and interviews with the patient and his family. The files were very useful to the understanding of Ro s history as perceived by the clinicians, including audiological exams, medical history, language reports and school progress. The interviews were semi-structured allowing for each member of the family to discuss how each step of the process was perceived. The results allowed for the identification of aspects related to success in the case of a progressive loss. The effective family involvement during the period that was analyzed and the partnership with the professionals of the intervention program seemed to have contributed enormously for the success in the development of oral language

A análise do caso foi realizada tanto na perspectiva clínico-terapêutica da audição, linguagem e percurso escolar do sujeito da pesquisa (Ro), quanto a partir das vivências dele e de seus familiares. Com a finalidade de retratar o processo da forma mais completa e profunda possível, recorremos a dois tipos de coleta de dados: levantamento de prontuários e entrevistas com o paciente e seus familiares. A análise dos prontuários buscou esclarecer a trajetória fonoaudiológica e a história de Ro na perspectiva das terapeutas. Foram observados dados de avaliação audiológica, visando caracterizar a perda auditiva, dados de linguagem, histórico médico e escolar descritos nos relatórios anuais. Quanto às entrevistas, a técnica utilizada foi a semi-dirigida, sendo que a análise desse material buscou a história de Ro a partir do olhar da família e dele mesmo, enfatizando como cada momento do processo de tratamento foi vivido por eles. Assim, a partir dos dados colhidos nos prontuários e nas entrevistas, este estudo permitiu a explicitação das particularidades envolvidas em um caso de perda auditiva progressiva.
