Emergência espiritual: uma revisão sistemática do estado atual da pesquisa e seus desdobramentos clínicos e conceituais

This research investigated, through systematic review in scientific databases, the current state of research on Spiritual Emergencies (EEs) and their clinical and conceptual developments, including the development and creation of the diagnostic category of 'Religious or Spiritual Problems' (Code V 62.89) of the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders). 85 works were identified and analyzed from 1986 to 2019. The results revealed the predominance of literature reviews published in American journals, more focused on the Transpersonal Psychology niche. The concept of EEs encounters significant methodological and conceptual challenges so that it gains greater expression in the medical and psychological literature. It was found that, despite the advances and contributions undoubtedly already achieved in favoring that spiritual experiences are not necessarily pathological, the often abstract and vague definitions that describe them, in addition to the attempt to encompass different types of experiences based on terminology of different religious / spiritual traditions, indicates that there are limitations of acceptance and possible dialogues with more scientific perspectives, as well as a universal and eclectic background trend characteristic of New Age spirituality. It was also found that the diagnostic category of 'Religious or Spiritual Problems 'of the DSM does not necessarily relate directly and clearly to the concept of EEs and that there are few studies that present the clinical use of the code. Still, the evidence points to the importance of discussions about EEs for the differential diagnosis between healthy and pathological spiritual experiences. The study concludes with suggestions for future research of an interdisciplinary nature, in dialogue with the Science of Applied Religion, and for the development of appropriate cartographies for the study of these phenomena
