Resumo:	This paper aims to discuss the relationship between elementary school students and literature, especially with regard to the development of readers. Based on data from the 2024 Retratos da leitura survey, which shows that young people do indeed enjoy reading, but prefer short texts, such as short stories and chronicles, chosen by themselves, we selected as our research corpus ten chronicles from the well-known collection Para gostar de ler, created by Jiro Takahashi for Editora Ática in the 1970s. We also highlight data related to the creation of another successful collection, Vaga lume, also published by Editora Ática, which relied on the opinions of elementary school students to guide the choices of themes for the works selected for the first volumes. We will also discuss the effectiveness of the chronicle as a genre that, due to its characteristics, encourages adolescents to read, in addition to providing them with sufficient autonomy to choose works and authors for their future readings

A partir de dados da pesquisa Retratos da leiturade 2024, que atesta sobre o fato dos jovens gostarem de ler, todavia preferirem textos curtos, tais como contos e crônicas, escolhidos por eles próprios, selecionamos como corpus de investigação dez crônicas da conhecida coleção “Para gostar de ler”, criada por Jiro Takahashi para a Editora Ática nos anos 70. Destacamos também para nossa abordagem, dados referentes à criação de outra coleção de sucesso, a “Vaga Lume”, da editora Ática, que contou com a opinião de alunos de escolas do Ensino Fundamental II para orientar a escolha de temáticas das obras selecionadas para os primeiros volumes. Discutiremos ainda a eficácia da crônica como gênero que, por suas características, encoraja o adolescente ao hábito da leitura, além de lhe propiciar autonomia suficiente para fazer a escolha de obras e autores para suas futurasleituras.
