This work reports on a qualitative research aiming to investigate how the Caderno do Professor de Matemática, Mathematics educational material comprised in the the Proposta Curricular do Estado de São Paulo (Curriculum Proposal of the Sao Paulo State) launched in 2008, approaches the topic of Matrices. To collect data for the study I used the content analysis methodology, as proposed by Bardin (2009). The resulting corpus consists of some official documents that regulate the teaching of Mathematics in Brazil, the 2008 and the 2009 editions of the aforementioned Caderno, as well as two high school textbooks of Mathematics. I researched the topic in its explicit and implicit forms in the Caderno, comparing the observed approach with the guidelines seen in the official documents, and with the approaches presented by the textbooks. The analysis of the corpus allowed me to conclude that: i) the approach of the matrices set forth in the Cadernos is in accordance with the guidelines proposed by the official documents that regulate the teaching of Mathematics in Brazilian high school education; ii) such approach, in general, closely resembles the approach used by one of the textbooks approved by the 2006 edition of the PNLEM (Programa Nacional do Livro Didático para o Ensino Médio - Brazilian Program of High School Textbooks), the one that displayed a greater concern in following the official recommendations; iii) the 2009 edition of the Cadernos introduces significant improvements as compared to the previous 2008 edition
