The scarcity of accessible bilingual resources in Brazilian Sign Language (LSB or Libras) such as glossaries – which are learning tools that help the dissemination of LSB and the inclusion of deaf people in specific areas such as Gerontology – is caused by a lack of professionals fluent in Libras and of specific gerontological terminology. This study is part of a doctoral research and presents a methodological and descriptive-qualitative analysis. The research resulted in a bilingual glossary in Libras and Portuguese of specific term-signs related to aging. The term-signs were created drawing from the document “The Decade of Healthy Aging in the Americas 2020-2030”, published in 2020 by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). The PAHO document was analyzed using the Iramuteq software and subsequently the most frequent terms were discussed with deaf researchers engaged in the Lexicon and Terminology research line of the Graduate Program in Linguistics at the University of Brasília (UnB) and associated with the Center for Lexical and Terminological Studies (Centro LexTerm) and the Sign Language Linguistics Laboratory (LabLibras). These researchers participated voluntarily in the selection, analysis, and creation of gerontology term-signs. The following term-signs were created: aging, older person, life expectancy, healthy aging decade, Gerontology, Geriatrics, and gerontologist. A terminological form for each term-sign was used to document the terminology creation process, which was also recorded on video, with the terminological form content made available on YouTube via QR code. The result of this joint work involving deaf and non-deaf people reinforced the importance of reducing communication barriers between deaf and hearing people.
