Resumo em Inglês: The growth of the elderly population is a worldwide phenomenon with direct consequences in public health systems. In Brazil, the Hyperdia program seeks to control prevention, diagnosis and treatment, as well as the planning of intervention strategies in hypertension and diabetes mellitus, aiming to delay their complications, since these are considered, among the chronic diseases, the most serious. The objective of this study was to compare the level of pain, strength and quality of life among elderly obese hypertensive patients and obese elderly diabetics. It is a quantitative cross-sectional study, carried out at the basic health units of the municipality of Barreiras / BA. The sample consisted of 52 participants, 35 hypertensive elderly obese and 17 obese diabetic elderly. All participants were enrolled with Hiperdia at least six months prior to the survey and respectively hypertensive and diabetic patients had: mean age of 68.3 ± 6.4 years; 68.6 ± 5.5 years, BMI 33.1 ± 4.9 kg/m2; 33.7 ± 8.8, kg/m2, respectivelly. The instruments applied were anthropometric measurements / body mass index; palmar grip strength; Visual Analogue Scale for Pain (EVA) and Quality of Life-old World Health Organization Questionnaire (WHOQOL-OLD). Results were expressed as mean ± standard deviation (SD). To observe the normality of the data, the Shapiro-Wilk test was used. The results showed that the level of pain reported by hypertensive elderly patients (5.3 ± 3.4) was statistically lower (p = 0.026) in the diabetic elderly group (7.4 ± 2.4). In the parameter of quality of life, obese hypertensive elderly presented better scores in the sensory functioning facets and past, present and future activities. For the other parameters evaluated, no statistically significant differences were observed. This result is due to the problems of diabetes itself. It should be noted that, parameters of strength, pain, anthropometrics and hemodynamics are not related to quality of life, since this evaluation is perceptive and the elderly do not perceive the clinical characteristics as possible negative factors for their quality of life.

Submitted by Sara Ribeiro (sara.ribeiro@ucb.br) on 2018-08-09T14:34:10Z No. of bitstreams: 1 ManuelaSodreCabralDissertacao2018.pdf: 1598588 bytes, checksum: ec1d29656dd8913db6a03cee0051961e (MD5)Approved for entry into archive by Sara Ribeiro (sara.ribeiro@ucb.br) on 2018-08-09T14:35:37Z (GMT) No. of bitstreams: 1 ManuelaSodreCabralDissertacao2018.pdf: 1598588 bytes, checksum: ec1d29656dd8913db6a03cee0051961e (MD5)Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-09T14:35:37Z (GMT).
