Resumo: Alabama argillacea and Chrysodeixis includens are two important defoliating pests of cotton. They have different levels of feeding specialization (monophagy and polyphagia, respectively), and are usually controlled with synthetic chemical insecticides. These products increase production costs and can cause undesirable environmental impacts. In this work, the effects of the kaolin inert powder and the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana on the mortality of A. argillacea and C. includens were determined under laboratory conditions. Initially, using the caterpillar submersion method, it was found that the CG 138 B. bassiana isolate is the most pathogenic against A. argillacea when compared to CG 70, GC 82, ESALQ 634, and ESALQ 645. There were no significant effects of the five tested isolates on C. includens. Then, by applying the leaf- disc feeding method, the effects of B. bassiana (CG 138) and kaolin on the mortality of caterpillars of A. argillacea and C. includens were determined. Higher A. argillacea mortalities were observed in the B. bassiana treatments (CG 138), regardless of the presence of kaolin. However, in C. includens, the activity of kaolin + B. bassiana (CG 138) was superior to the individual actions of each ingredient, indicating an additive action of these two ingredients against larvae of C. includens. There was no significant difference between A. argillacea and C. includens treated with kaolin + B. bassiana (CG 138). However, A. argillacea mortalities were higher than C. includens when kaolin and B. bassiana (GC 138) were applied separately. It is concluded that the treatment kaolin + B. bassiana (CG 138) is the most promising method for the simultaneous management of these two species of defoliating pests, and should be tested in field conditions, in the cotton crop. In addition, the monophagous A. argillacea is more susceptible to both kaolin and B. bassiana (GC 138) than the polyphagous C. includens, suggesting that nutritional ecology plays an important role in the susceptibility of these defoliating species to alternative insecticides.

Elas apresentam diferentes níveis de especialização (monofagia e polifagia, respectivamente), e são geralmente controladas com inseticidas químicos sintéticos. Esses produtos aumentam os custos de produção e podem ocasionar impactos ambientais indesejáveis. Neste trabalho, determinaram-se os efeitos do pó inerte caulim e do fungo entomopatogênico, Beauveria bassiana, sobre a mortalidade de A. argillacea e C. includens, em condições de laboratório. Inicialmente, utilizando-se o método de submersão de lagartas, descobriu-se que isolado CG 138 de B. bassiana é o mais patogênico contra A. argillacea quando comparado com CG 70, CG 82, ESALQ 634, e ESALQ 645. Não se observaram efeitos significativos dos cinco isolados sobre C. includens. Em seguida, aplicando-se o método de alimentação com discos foliares, determinaram-se os efeitos de B. bassiana (CG 138) e do caulim sobre lagartas de A. argillacea e C. includens. Observaram-se maiores mortalidades de A. argillacea nos tratamentos com B. bassiana (CG 138), independentemente da presença do caulim. Contudo, em C. includens, a atividade de caulim + B. bassiana (CG 138) foi superior às ações individuais de cada ingrediente, indicando ação aditiva destes dois ingredientes contra lagartas de C. includens. Não se observou diferença significativa entre A. argillacea e C. includens tratadas com caulim + B. bassiana (CG 138). Contudo, as mortalidades de A. argillacea foram superiores às de C. includens quando caulim e B. bassiana (CG 138) foram aplicados separadamente. Conclui-se que o tratamento caulim + B. bassiana (CG 138) é o mais promissor visando ao manejo simultâneo destas duas espécies de lagartas desfolhadoras, devendo ser testado em condições de campo, na cultura do algodão. Ademais, a monófaga A. argillacea é mais sucesptível do que a polífaga C. includens tanto ao caulim quanto a B. bassiana (CG 138), sugerindo que a ecologia nutricional tem papel importante na susceptibilidade destas espécies desfolhadoras a inseticidas alternativos.Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPESapplication/pdfUniversidade Estadual da ParaíbaPrograma de Pós-Graduação em Ciências Agrárias - PPGCAUEPBBRPró-Reitoria de Pós-Graduação e Pesquisa - PRPGPPró-Reitoria de Pós-Graduação e Pesquisa - PRPGPLeafwormCIENCIAS AGRARIASCuruquerêGossypium hirsutumPraga do algodoeiroCultura do algodãoSuscetibilidade de lagartas desfolhadoras do algodoeiro ao fungo Beauveria bassiana misturado ao cauliminfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/masterThesisSilva, Cherre Sade Bezerra dahttp://lattes.cnpq.br/1233965363869417Correa, Elida Barbosahttp://lattes.cnpq.br/3308762941982851Silva, Carlos Alberto Domingues dahttp://lattes.cnpq.br/9605692859227718http://lattes.cnpq.br/2079538622774442Galdino, Josivaldo da Silvainfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessporreponame:Repositório Institucional da Universidade Estadual da Paraíba (UEPB)instname:Universidade Estadual da Paraíba (UEPB)instacron:UEPBLICENSElicense.txtlicense.txttext/plain;
