Resumo: Water scarcity, a recurring theme of global concern, is one of the main problems for agriculture in the Brazilian Northeast. In this region, melon production is concentrated in Brazil and almost all of the water used in its irrigation comes from deep wells, the vast majority of which have a high salt content. Therefore, the use of saline water for melon irrigation in the Brazilian Northeast is imperative and rational management is necessary, based on technical-scientific data. Given this, the research aimed to evaluate the effects of using saline water on plant growth, production, fruit quality and fruit metabolism of yellow melon variety Goldex. The research was conducted in the field at the Pacajus Experimental Station in a completely randomized design with two salinity levels of irrigation water (0.8 and 4.0 dS m-1) and eight evaluation times (52, 54, 56, 58 , 60, 62, 64 and 66 DAT) where the growth of plants and fruits and the production and quality of these fruits were evaluated. In a protected environment, the research was conducted at Embrapa Agroindústria Tropical, in Fortaleza, Ceará, in a greenhouse. The experimental design was conducted in randomized blocks, with four electrical conductivities of irrigation water (1.5, 2.5, 3.5 and 4.5 dS m-1) and four stages of development (48, 54, 60 and 64 DAT), where plant growth, production, post-harvest quality and fruit metabolism were evaluated. Under field conditions, salinity (4.0 dS m-1) reduced plant growth, leaf area and branch length, while fruit production and post-harvest quality were not affected by saline stress. In a protected environment, there was an increase in gas exchange and chlorophyll index and a reduction in leaf area (30% reduction in salinity of 4.5 dS m-1) and fruit mass. Nessa região, se concentra a produção de melão no Brasil e a quase totalidade da água utilizada na sua irrigação são provenientes de poços profundos, os quais na grande maioria apresentam alto teor de sais. Dessa maneira, o uso de água salina para irrigação do melão no Nordeste brasileiro é imperativo e se faz necessário um manejo racional, baseado em dados técnicos-científicos. Diante disto, a pesquisa teve como objetivo avaliar os efeitos do uso de água salina no crescimento das plantas, na produção, qualidade de frutos e metabolismo de frutos de melão amarelo variedade Goldex. A pesquisa foi conduzida em campo na estação Experimental de Pacajus em delineamento inteiramente casualizado com dois níveis de salinidade da água de irrigação (0,8 e 4,0 dS m-1) e oito épocas de avaliação (52, 54, 56, 58, 60, 62, 64 e 66 DAT) onde se avaliou o crescimento das plantas e frutos e a produção e qualidade desses frutos. Em ambiente protegido, a pesquisa foi conduzida na Embrapa Agroindústria Tropical, em Fortaleza, Ceará, em casa de vegetação. O delineamento experimental foi conduzido em blocos ao acaso, com quatro condutividades elétricas da água de irrigação (1,5, 2,5, 3,5 e 4,5 dS m-1) e quatro estádios de desenvolvimento (48, 54, 60 e 64 DAT), onde foi avaliado o crescimento das plantas, a produção, a qualidade pós colheita e o metabolismo dos frutos. Em condições de campo a salinidade (4,0 dS m-1) reduziu o crescimento das plantas, a área foliar e o comprimento de ramos, enquanto a produção e a qualidade pós colheita dos frutos não foram afetadas pelo estresse salino. Em ambiente protegido houve aumento das trocas gasosas e índice de clorofila e redução da área foliar (redução de 30% na salinidade de 4,5 dS m-1) e da massa dos frutos. Por lo tanto, el uso de agua salina para el riego del melón en el Nordeste brasileño es imperativo y necesaria una gestión racional, basada en datos técnico-científicos. Ante esto, la investigación tuvo como objetivo evaluar los efectos del uso de agua salina sobre el crecimiento vegetal, la producción, la calidad del fruto y el metabolismo del fruto del melón amarillo variedad Goldex. La investigación se realizó en campo en la Estación Experimental Pacajus en un diseño completamente al azar con dos niveles de salinidad del agua de riego (0.8 y 4.0 dS m-1) y ocho tiempos de evaluación (52, 54, 56, 58, 60, 62, 64 y 66 DAT) donde se evaluó el crecimiento de plantas y frutos y la producción y calidad de estos frutos. En un ambiente protegido, la investigación se realizó en la Embrapa Agroindústria Tropical, en Fortaleza, Ceará, en un invernadero. El diseño experimental se realizó en bloques al azar, con cuatro conductividades eléctricas del agua de riego (1.5, 2.5, 3.5 y 4.5 dS m-1) y cuatro etapas de desarrollo (48, 54, 60 y 64 DDT), donde el crecimiento de las plantas, la producción , se evaluó la calidad poscosecha y el metabolismo del fruto. En condiciones de campo, la salinidad (4,0 dS m-1) redujo el crecimiento de las plantas, el área foliar y la longitud de las ramas, mientras que la producción de frutos y la calidad poscosecha no se vieron afectadas por el estrés salino. En ambiente protegido hubo un aumento en el intercambio gaseoso y el índice de clorofila y una reducción en el área foliar (reducción del 30% en la salinidad de 4,5 dS m-1) y masa de frutos. La concentración de sólidos solubles totales no se vio comprometida en condiciones de estrés salino. El metabolismo de los frutos de melón sufrió ligeros cambios debido al estrés salino. Los datos indican que el uso de agua salina puede ser una alternativa para la producción de melón.La pénurie d'eau, un thème récurrent de préoccupation mondiale, est l'un des principaux problèmes de l'agriculture dans le nord-est du Brésil. Dans cette région, la production de melon est concentrée au Brésil et la quasi-totalité de l'eau utilisée pour son irrigation provient de puits profonds, dont la grande majorité a une forte teneur en sel. Par conséquent, l’utilisation d’eau salée pour l’irrigation des melons dans le nord-est du Brésil est impérative et une gestion rationnelle est nécessaire, basée sur des données technico-scientifiques. Compte tenu de cela, la recherche visait à évaluer les effets de l’utilisation d’eau saline sur la croissance des plantes, la production, la qualité des fruits et le métabolisme des fruits de la variété de melon jaune Goldex. La recherche a été menée sur le terrain à la Station expérimentale de Pacajus selon un plan complètement randomisé avec deux niveaux de salinité de l'eau d'irrigation (0,8 et 4,0 dS m-1) et huit temps d'évaluation (52, 54, 56, 58, 60, 62, 64 et 66 DAT) où ont été évaluées la croissance des plantes et des fruits ainsi que la production et la qualité de ces fruits. Dans un environnement protégé, la recherche a été menée à l'Embrapa Agroindústria Tropical, à Fortaleza, Ceará, dans une serre. Le plan expérimental a été réalisé en blocs randomisés, avec quatre conductivités électriques de l'eau d'irrigation (1,5, 2,5, 3,5 et 4,5 dS m-1) et quatre stades de développement (48, 54, 60 et 64 DAT), où la croissance des plantes, la production , la qualité après récolte et le métabolisme des fruits ont été évalués. Dans des conditions de terrain, la salinité (4,0 dS m-1) a réduit la croissance des plantes, la surface des feuilles et la longueur des branches, tandis que la production de fruits et la qualité après récolte n'ont pas été affectées par le stress salin. Dans un environnement protégé, on a observé une augmentation des échanges gazeux et de l'indice de chlorophylle ainsi qu'une réduction de la surface foliaire (réduction de 30% de la salinité de 4,5 dS m-1) et de la masse des fruits. La concentration des solides solubles totaux n’a pas été compromise dans des conditions de stress salin. Le métabolisme des fruits du melon a subi de légers changements dus au stress salin.
