O estudo da violência na análise do comportamento: uma análise bibliográfica e conceitual.

Violence is a widely harmful phenomenon widespread along the history of humanity. Given the need to better understand this event, the goal of this work was to analyze the use of the term “violence” in behavior analysis literature. Since the meaning of a term is to be found in its use, we hoped to find aspects related to the meaning of “violence” as a behavior-analytic category thorough this endeavor. Specifically, we aimed to locate and describe the research categories about violence in behavior analysis literature; locate and describe the main behavior-analytical publications (journals, books) who published works on violence; locate and describe the thematic domains of violence studies in behavior analysis; and locate and describe the main behavioral categories associated with violence. Violence sometimes appears as synonym of aggression and sometimes as synonym of coercion. In some cases, the topography of response and the harmful effect (physical harm) on the subject seems to be the guiding criteria in defining violence. In other cases, the escape function to the perpetrator is taken as the criteria. Its role as aversive condition that leads to escape or avoidance pattern is also considered. Additionally, especially in cultural or social analyses, violence seems to be associated, not with the behavior of a particular agent, but with macrosocial conditions that engender a variety of cultural practices. In sum, it seems that a universally shared definition of violence is absent in behavior analysis literature. We end this work with some reflections on the different characteristics associated with violence in behavior analysis
