Resumo: This work was conducted aiming to evaluate the interaction of lettuce and rocket on biological and economic aspects under different spatial arrangements and planting systems. The behavior and the effect of biological interactions among the organisms, specifically horticultural crops still need further studies. Thus, four experiments were carried out, from February to September of 2006 at Federal University of Lavras - UFLA. The experiments were: 1 - Biotest perfomed in laboratory, evaluating the allelopatic potencial of rocket extracts on the germination velocity rate (IVG), length of radicle and hypocotil, fresh weight and dry weight of lettuce seedlings; 2 - Experiment in greenhouse, evaluating in the associations among plants, the influence of rocket on the development of lettuce in intercrops; 3 - Experiment in field, where the intercropping if lettuce/rocket was evaluated agronomicaly under different planting geometries, in organic and mineral fertilization. 4 - The economic viability of the intercropping with lettuce and rocket was evaluated as related to organic and mineral fertilization. 1 - There was an influence of rocket extracts upon the lettuce development of; 2 - The increase of rocket plants density reduced the accumulation of fresh mass and dry weight of the aerial part; 3 - All lettuce and rocket planting densisties and the monocultures presented better performance under the organic fertilization. The second sprouting of rocket increased efficiency of the intercropping system. Lettuce and rocket in the 3A: 3R spatial arrangement gave higher efficiency. 4 - The highest yield of the intercrop was achieved in the organic system. The highest profit and turnover were obtained in the 1 and 3 arrangements of the lettuce/rocket intercropping.
