Understanding the history of literature is an essential element for the appropriation of literary texts, as it situates a work within its historical, cultural, and aesthetic context, thereby expanding interpretation and revealing dialogues with both local and universal traditions. In the context of Pedreiras, the history of literature goes beyond the mere recording of facts and names, functioning as a tool for valuing and recognizing an identity that enriches reading and enhances the critical and aesthetic understanding of the municipality’s literary production. Accordingly, this dissertation focuses on the history of literature in Pedreiras and on the intrinsic relationship between the literary text and its historical context, considering the importance of the reader’s understanding of the latter to achieve a deeper appropriation of the former. The study aims to identify the main historical milestones in Pedreiras’ poetic and literary production and to understand how this literature fits within the broader context of literary history, both Brazilian and Maranhão-based. To support the research, the study primarily relies on the work of Professor Roberto Acízelo de Souza, as well as the theories of Campognon (1999), Chartier (2002), and many others who have significantly contributed to the construction of knowledge regarding Brazilian and Maranhão literary history, in addition to those dedicated to the history and literature of Pedreiras, such as Kleber Lago and Darlan Pereira Fernandes. The research is qualitative, bibliographic, and documentary in nature, with a historical-analytical approach. The study shows that the literature of Pedreiras’ authors combines elements of local culture with external influences, producing unique works that, although rooted in Pedreiras, often transcend the city’s boundaries. Thus, it is concluded that the systematization of this literary history contributes both to preserving the city’s cultural memory and to enhancing the understanding of the role of local literatures in shaping the collective imagination.
