The aim of this study is to analyze the habit of nickname people in Cláudio town, located in the middle region Minas western and in the micro region of Divinópolis. Seeking to understand the motivations of that habit as well as its amplitude, evolution, ideological implications in the claudienses generations. Guided by concepts that are extracted fromdifferent fields - Lexicology, Semantics, Onomastics, Anthropology and Linguistics Sociolinguistics, the research was developed from the qualitative and quantitative analysis of Apelista- Nicknames Phonebook, which is allowed to classify anthroponyms found in Nicknames, Hypochoristic, Names with Reference. By the second analysis, which consisted of 59 interviews with people who were born and live in Cláudio town, checked how this habit updates at different ages group and genders, both from the rural and the urban. The results obtained from the research show the importance of reference and affectivity in theimplementation of this habit. It was possible to identify that the nicknames use, a resource very often used to express affection, stems in general, in the familiar environment and that the gender factor interferes in this phenomenon.
