Tradição e transformação nas práticas musicais da Corporação Musical Nossa Senhora da Conceição de Raposos - MG

Inspired by my experience as a musician and band conductor, I bring into this research some reflections upon the wind band named Corporação Musical Nossa Senhora da Conceição [Our Lady of Conception Musical Group], which has been acting in the musical scene of Minas Gerais for 89 years. The specific purpose of this paper is related to the meanings and social applications of the bands musical practices; also, it relates to the permanent dialogue that the community and the group analyzed establish with each other. From a researchers point of view it was possible to observe issues particular to the musical practices developed by the band as well as the repertoire used on its performances. The relationship with the group as I was able to notice based on the revised bibliography was set through paths rarely explored in researches with such notions; researches that have Ethnomusicology as the guiding subject for observations and fieldwork. Interviews (with internal and external public), documents evaluation (scores, photos, and minutes) along with observation of the activities developed by the Corporação Musical Nossa Senhora da Conceição were the common methodologic procedures used in this research. During fieldwork, the discourse of band members about the repertoire raised a discussion on the dialogue between tradition and transformation. This was relevant to the observation of the music and musical practices developed by the group. The knowledge built by this research demonstrates the relations between society, musical education (band), repertoire, and the kinds of ceremonies in which they perform, among other factors. Hence, Ill speak next about the wind band Corporação Musical Nossa Senhora da Conceição and its music in the context of a social and historical reality.
