Resumo: | This study aims to examine the portrayal of the feminine way of dressing done by French artist Jean-Baptiste Debret in the period he lived in Brazil, and the relation of such clothing with the space and the role of women of different social classes and ethnicities in Rio de Janeiro, in the Brazilian society of the 1800s. Therefore, it was necessary to understand the concept of fashion and its interdisciplinary relations, as well as its role in the configuration of the spaces. It is also necessary to understand the social phenomena that directly influenced the way of dressing, in addition to the politics and the economy of the period, and the relationship of the artist with de way of dressing and the Brazilian society he extensively portrayed. For that reason, we tried to understand the connection between the bodies and their clothings, and the urban centers, once thats the scenario of most pictures analyzed. Another important aspect of Debrets relationship with the female way of dressing in the 1800s is his proximity with the royal family, in which evidence of his direct influence has been found he designed clothes to some Brazilian monarchs thus impacting on the dressing habits of the Fluminense capital. Always aware of the details and characteristics of the residents of Brazil, one can find in the artists work and also in this study an analysis of the African and African-Brazilian clothing, along with their practices and peculiarities. |

Always aware of the details and characteristics of the residents of Brazil, one can find in the artists work and also in this study an analysis of the African and African-Brazilian clothing, along with their practices and peculiarities.Este trabalho tem por objetivo examinar a retratação do vestir feminino realizada pelo artista francês Jean-Baptiste Debret no período em que esteve no Brasil, e a relação dessas vestes com o espaço e o papel da mulher dos diferentes extratos sociais e etnias na capital fluminense na sociedade oitocentista brasileira. Para tal, foi necessário entender o conceito de moda e suas relações interdisciplinares, bem como seu papel na configuração dos espaços. Fez-se necessário, também, buscar a compreensão dos fenômenos sociais, que, embora diretamente nada tivessem com o vestir, influenciaram-no diretamente, assim como a política e a economia do período estudado e a relação do artista em questão com o vestir e a sociedade brasileira que ele extensamente retratou. Assim, buscou-se compreender a relação entre os corpos e seus trajes e os centros urbanos, visto ser esse o cenário da maioria das gravuras analisadas. Um outro aspecto importante quanto à relação de Debret no vestir feminino no Oitocentos brasileiro diz respeito à sua proximidade com a família real, em que encontramos indícios de o artista ter influenciado diretamente na constituição desse vestir, chegando a criar trajes para alguns soberanos brasileiros e influenciando assim, os modos de vestir na capital fluminense.
