This study aims to examine the portrayal of the feminine way of dressing done by French artist Jean-Baptiste Debret in the period he lived in Brazil, and the relation of such clothing with the space and the role of women of different social classes and ethnicities in Rio de Janeiro, in the Brazilian society of the 1800s. Therefore, it was necessary to understand the concept of fashion and its interdisciplinary relations, as well as its role in the configuration of the spaces. It is also necessary to understand the social phenomena that directly influenced the way of dressing, in addition to the politics and the economy of the period, and the relationship of the artist with de way of dressing and the Brazilian society he extensively portrayed. For that reason, we tried to understand the connection between the bodies and their clothings, and the urban centers, once thats the scenario of most pictures analyzed. Another important aspect of Debrets relationship with the female way of dressing in the 1800s is his proximity with the royal family, in which evidence of his direct influence has been found he designed clothes to some Brazilian monarchs thus impacting on the dressing habits of the Fluminense capital. Always aware of the details and characteristics of the residents of Brazil, one can find in the artists work and also in this study an analysis of the African and African-Brazilian clothing, along with their practices and peculiarities.
