Understanding the representation of the sertão of Piauí and the sertanejo is the focus of this research. Through the narratives of the judge, writer, folklorist and writer João Nonon de Moura Fontes Ibiapina, we problematize what he himself called the "leather cycle" of Piauí, present in the novels: Sambaíba (1963), Tombador (1971), Nas Terras do Arabutã (1984) and Vida Gemida em Sambambaia (1985), the "tetralogy of leather". Having its space set in the sertão and highlighting the sertanejo, the Tetralogy of Leather focuses on the deep-rooted stereotypes of the Northeast, such as drought, wars, poverty and the toil of rural life, from the nineteenth century to the twentieth century. the expansion of farms and cattle ranching, the abolition of slavery and the Republic, despite the ills of drought, the effects of the Paraguayan War (1864- 1870) and slavery. Valuing the regionalism of Piauí, writing about their youth in the rural area, each historical subject knows and writes their place in a unique way, carrying a multiplicity, with constant changes occurring according to the processes (Rolnik, 2004). To enrich this research, we used the theoretical contribution of authors such as Jacques Le Goff (2003), Pesavento (2007), Paul Ricoeur (1986), Roger Chartier (2001), among others. In the meantime, we realize the importance of valuing local historiography and observing how literature understands regional issues, as literature and history work on rich, tense, and creative records, which associate apprehensions of told lives and invented worlds.
