In order to analyze the large volume of information in the contemporary world, it is necessary to awaken to the relevance in the organization of information, as a primary factor in decision-making in different institutions, whether of public or private origin. Given this scenario, this research has the general objective of proposing improvements to the Acervus system of the Seca and Semi-Arid Thematic Nucleus (NUT-Seca) of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte and as specific objectives: to characterize the aforementioned nucleus in terms of its potential for research; select thematic documentation centers of social and institutional relevance through the benchmarking technique to identify, from the collections of the chosen centers, best practices around the descriptive organization of information in order to allow the identification of metadata fields so that they can be analyzed , compared with a view to elaborating propositions to the Acervus system of NUT-Seca; propose a product with specific guidelines aligned with the precepts of document management of improvements to be implemented in the Acervus system. It uses exploratory and documentary research of a descriptive nature as a methodology, using the qualitative approach method, based on literature review and documental research, focused on Information Management, Document Management, brief history of NUT-Seca and origin of the Acervus system, in addition to the use of the benchmarking technique in the analysis of the (online) environments of the selected documentation centers to analyze the arrangement of the information search fields. As an information collection technique, interviews were applied through semi-structured questionnaires. The sample consisted of members of the NUT-Seca team. The need for planning based on a document management policy to be applied to the NUT-Seca collection for insertion in the Acervus system was observed. In general, the absence of important search options in the Acervus system was identified. In the researcher's perception in relation to the Acervus system and the NUT-Seca, a list of suggestions was prepared in order to add improvements to the processes and techniques consistent with access to the NUT-Seca collection on Acervus.
