Resumo: This research investigates the processes of sportification and marginalization of skateboarders in Boa Vista, the capital of the state of Roraima, between 1980 and 2004. The work seeks to identify the historically constructed aspects of sportivization and marginalization in relation to the group of skateboarders, listing their counter-cultural and deviant practices and representations. The methodology adopted was documentary analysis from the perspective of Cultural Studies and the sources used were local newspapers with wide circulation, magazines in the skateboarding niche, fanzines, documents from the historical records of the Boa Vista Skateboarding Association. Research was also carried out on films and videos produced for the skateboarding universe at international, national and local level, with the aim of understanding and relating the aspects of identity and otherness that involved the skateboarders of Boa Vista. The aim of this research was to understand how skateboarders constructed their identity in Boa Vista in the ambivalence between sportification and marginalization. The study briefly presents the history of skateboarding in the world and its arrival in the capital of the state of Roraima and how the places in the city of Boa Vista occupied by the new urban groups - called galeras - have created tensions with the sporty practices and representations of skateboarders. One of the elements of tension appears in the coverage given by local print newspapers, which criticized the galeros, accusing them of criminal practices. Because of this, skateboarders ended up being mistaken for criminals and therefore claimed to be sportsmen, distancing themselves from marginalized representations. Another aspect of tension analyzed was the abrupt death of skateboarder Israel Gomes de Almeida in Anauá Park, murdered by a gang member in 1999. As a result, the “so-called marginal” identity gained strength in skaters' representations. The thesis seeks to argue that the practices and representations of the construction of the identities of the skateboarding group in Boa Vista presented tensions, since, although they sought to identify themselves through sporting self-representations, they also ended up being identified with “marginal” practices.
