Although the literature acknowledges the relevance of family firms to the global economy, conceptual gaps and theoretical fragmentation remain regarding the factors that shape strategic decision-making processes in these contexts. Accordingly, the main objective of this research is to identify and systematize the factors that influence strategic decision-making in family businesses, while also advancing the conceptual delimitation of the phenomenon itself. The research is structured into three complementary studies. The first examines the determinants of strategic decision-making in small businesses, identifying structural, behavioral, and contextual elements that influence the decision-making process. The second study conducts a conceptual reassessment of what characterizes a strategic decision in family firms, using an inductive analysis of the literature and proposing a definition adapted to the specificities of this type of organization. The third study proposes a reconceptualization of the family firm as a continuous construct, arguing that family influence should be understood in varying degrees across the dimensions of ownership, governance, and management. Methodologically, the dissertation employs systematic literature review and conceptual reconstruction procedures, allowing the identification of analytical patterns and theoretical gaps in the field. The findings indicate that strategic decision-making in family businesses is characterized by the coexistence of economic and non-economic objectives, the centrality of family influence in decision processes, and the presence of organizational structures that are often informal and owner oriented. As a contribution, this dissertation organizes relevant factors for the study of strategic decision-making, proposes a conceptual definition tailored to the context of family businesses, and introduces a continuous approach to understanding family influence within organizations.
