In the early 1970s, the modern architecture of Fortaleza, following the general movement of Brazilian architecture, showed conceptual inflections, echoing changes that had already been going on since the late '50s. initially located in São Paulo and soon spread to other regions such diverse experiences were later grouped under the label of Brutalism. This work aims to understand and analyze the brutalist architecture that happened in Fortaleza between 1970 and 1988, focusing on the institutional works, because it was felt that this universe, the importance of customers (federal and state institutions) and symbolic values and level of investment, have size and social resonance front to the ‘style’. From the recognition of twenty-four major works of the period, developed a report of buildings, main research instrument, from which cross analysis and categorizations were developed in order to identify the quality and characteristics of its architecture, its relations with the national scene. The ultimate aim is to recognize his expression and pointing out that the Fortaleza’s Brutalist architecture has not developed a local expression, to a set of practices and unique processes that distinguish it in the rest of the country.
