Resumo: The supermarket industry has significant economic relevance, employing over 700 thousands persons in Brasil. The economical events in this segment has been widely studied in the litherature, however, few times with researches inside the retail companies with the broad objective of identify the determinant performance indicators in a supermarket. It was object of the research, focusing in a specific format of 170 stores the collection of primary data through a survey with the professionals responsible for stores operations and secondary data with various financial and operational indicators of the stores covered in the research. The strategy and the qualitative understanding was checked against the interviews with high management. The researched concluded through statistical analysis that the human resources practices has correlation with the functioning of the stores and that the quality of products and store cleanliness re the main attributes of quality. Additionality, it was verified that the performance is also impacted by inventory management, competition characteristics, the renovation of the stores and its location, despite the fact that these two were not statistically proved. The present research fulfills a void in the literature in supermarket chains exploring the different elements that impacts performance.

Os eventos econômicos neste segmento têm sido amplamente estudados na literatura, porém poucas vezes com pesquisas dentro das empresas, com o objetivo de identificar os fatores determinantes de performance em um supermercado. Foi objeto do estudo, uma rede de supermercados com diversos formatos em que foi adotado um formato específico de supermercados, com 170 lojas, para o levantamento de dados primários através de survey com os responsáveis das lojas, e secundários com vários dados financeiros e operacionais das lojas cobertas pelo estudo. A estratégia e o entendimento geral qualitativo foram verificados por meio de entrevistas com a alta administração da entidade. O estudo constatou mediante análises estatísticas que as práticas de recursos humanos têm correlação com o funcionamento das lojas, e que qualidade dos produtos e limpeza das lojas são os principais atributos de qualidade. Adicionalmente, afetam o desempenho das lojas a localidade, a característica da competição, a gestão dos estoques e a renovação dos seus ativos, apesar desses atributos não serem provados estatisticamente.
