Resumo: Introduction: Overweight and obesity are public health problems in the world, affecting children, adolescents, adults and the elderly. Genetic and environmental factors contribute to the overall scenario. The interest on the first moments of life in the etiology of obesity is growing, especially the prenatal period, a critical period for the development and persistence of excess of body weight. Objective: To estimate the incidence of excess of body weight in the school period and to explore eventual association with prenatal factors. Methods: A longitudinal epidemiological study involving students from the first to the fifth year of elementary school from public and private schools of Palhoça/SC, Brazil was carried out. To obtain the Body Mass Index, weight and height were collected using the method recommended by the Ministry of Health, in the years 2015 and 2019. The analyzes were performed using Poisson Regression. Variables with p≤0.25 in the bivariate analysis were included in a multivariate analysis in which the relative risks and 95% confidence intervals were estimated. Results: 228 students were included. The incidence of excess of body weight in the studied period was 19.3%, being overweight 17.1% and obesity 2.2%. A statistically significant association between the mother's age at pregnancy and excess of body weight (p=0.021) was observed. Among the characteristics of birth, schoolchildren with the 1st minute Apgar score ≤7 (p=0.028) and those who presented problems at birth (p=0.038) also had higher excess of body weight. The results of the multivariate analysis showed that the mother's age at pregnancy and the reporting problems at birth lost significance. Students who were born with 1st minute Apgar score ≤7 showed 34% higher risk of developing excess of body weight in the school period. Conclusion: The incidence of body weight was high. Prenatal factors were not associated with the incidence, with the exception of 1st minute Apgar score ≤7.
