Resumo: Plants as food sources, shelter, defense and medical purposes are historically used by traditional populations based on a knowledge transmitted from generation to generation and that is perpetuated to the present day. Although modern medicine has strong scientific and technological apparatus in most of the world, the People's Medicine and alternative practices have provoked the interest of the general population. This study investigated whether the changes in the current cultural context influenced the maintenance, alteration or deletion of traditional practices with medicinal plants. The study went conducted by bibliographic and field research. With the literature was possible to have a historical overview of the use of these plants and how this practice has guided the curative activities of many people over time. This study also expatiates on the authors that discuss the concept of Post-Modernity, Identity and Memory. The field research was developed with two groups, one made up of people without academic degree, representatives of popular medicine and other of professionals with academic background in health care, representatives of traditional medicine. Data collection was conducted through oral history, observations and image registration. The analysis of the results concluded that there was no extinction of memory processes or identity of women working in the Popular Medicine, but the reinterpretation and even validation of their knowledge from the encounter and dialogue with the Traditional Medicine. The results obtained from this work inferred that the proposal to legitimize the practice of Popular Medicine contributes to the maintenance and transmission of knowledge. In addition, they led the development of the concept of Modernity in Motion, even facing the reality of this research can be extrapolated to other similar situations. The contributions produced in this research showed, by their tacit and empirical characteristics, that popular knowledge is an important body of knowledge and experiences. And because presenting this Modernity in Motion, the changes that occur throughout the history inhibit deletion of popular knowledge socially and historically produced. On the contrary, this movement makes the knowledge can be (re) meaning and amalgamated to Modernity without losing liquidity of the times.
