Resumo: This study investigates the development of a non-institucional sub-system of health linked to the official medicaI system. It is argued that both of these compose a new health 'system' for urban areas. In addition, the study discusses the assumption within modernization theory that folk medicine would disappear as urbanization and industrialization increase. The author stresses the importance of cultural factors and analyses the health conception of users, making use of cultural and historical theory perspectives.
