Resumo: For the production of starch and cassava flour occurs the steps of washing, peeling, grating and pressing in order to obtain the product. These phases generate large amounts of waste with high content of organic matter and toxic components, such as the yellow water resulting from pressing cassava, known as manipueira. Usually these residues are treated in settling ponds, where the degradation occurs by anaerobic processes, generating biogas which is released into the atmosphere. The main constituents of biogas are methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2). In an initiative by companies from the state of Paran??, Brazil, a new technology has been installed to turn the lagoons in digesters to capture methane from the perspective of an alternative for the treatment of waste and promotion of environmental innovation. However, this technology is new in this kind of industry, still requiring evaluation of their technical, economic and environmental benefits. Within this context, the following research question can be presented: what advantages and disadvantages of the use of biogas the technology brings in the environmental point of view and how to characterize them and evaluate them? This study evaluated the environmental performance in three industries, applying the methodology of multiple case study. In order to support the collection and interpretation of data processing, it was selected environmental performance indicators from the framework for sustainability reporting GRI, related to aspects of material consumption, air emissions, water consumption, energy consumption, emission and effluent. As a result of the application of these indicators, some positive results, such as reduction consumption of fuel wood and of the atmospheric emissions of greenhouse gas (GHG) were observed. Research has shown, using the numbers presented on the indicators evaluated, that the use of biogas in the agribusiness sector is a kind of promising initiative by the points of views economically and environmentally, with significant positive practical results, noting that one of the companies surveyed had a decrease in the consumption of firewood in the order of 95%. Another was less considerable, saving half of the wood with the use of biogas. In all cases, however, there was considerable improvement in performance, with a reduction of costs production and of the emissions of air pollutants, especially in relation to GHGs. In this way, the research contributes to a better understanding of technology and a possible fomentation to use it.

Esses geram quantidades significativas de res??duos com alta carga org??nica e componentes t??xicos, como a ??gua amarelada, conhecida como manipueira. Tradicionalmente, esses res??duos s??o tratados em lagoas de estabiliza????o por processos anaer??bios, que gera biog??s e esse ?? liberado para a atmosfera. Os principais constituintes do biog??s s??o o metano (CH4) e o g??s carb??nico (CO2). Em iniciativa de empresas do estado do Paran??, uma tecnologia vem sendo instalada para transformar as lagoas em biodigestores com capta????o do metano, dentro da perspectiva de uma alternativa para o tratamento de res??duos e a promo????o de inova????o ambiental. No entanto, esta tecnologia ?? recente neste tipo de ind??stria, necessitando de avalia????o de seus benef??cios t??cnicos, econ??micos e ambientais. Dentro deste contexto, t??m-se a seguinte quest??o de pesquisa: que vantagens e desvantagens a tecnologia de aproveitamento de biog??s traz do ponto de vista ambiental e como caracteriz??-los e avali??-los? O presente trabalho avaliou o desempenho ambiental em tr??s ind??strias, aplicando a metodologia de estudo de casos m??ltiplos. Como suporte ao processo de coleta e interpreta????o de dados, foram selecionados indicadores de desempenho ambiental do framework para relat??rios de sustentabilidade da GRI, relacionados aos aspectos consumo de materiais, emiss??es atmosf??ricas, consumo de ??gua, consumo de energia, e emiss??o de efluentes. Como resultado da aplica????o desses indicadores, foram observados alguns resultados positivos, como economia de combust??vel lenha e diminui????o das emiss??es atmosf??ricas de gases de efeito estufa (GEE??s). A pesquisa mostrou, com os n??meros apresentados nos indicadores avaliados, que o aproveitamento de biog??s no setor de agroneg??cios ?? um tipo de iniciativa promissora, tanto do ponto de vista econ??mico quanto ambiental, com resultados pr??ticos positivos expressivos, ressaltando que uma das empresas pesquisadas teve um decr??scimo no consumo de lenha na ordem de 95%. Outra foi menos consider??vel, poupando metade da lenha com o aproveitamento do biog??s. Em todos os casos, por??m, houve melhora consider??vel no desempenho, com a diminui????o dos custos produtivos e das emiss??es de poluentes atmosf??ricos, principalmente em rela????o aos GEE??s.
