Resumo: Introduction: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterized by airflow limitation, associated with an inflammatory response and systemic manifestations, such as dyspnea, stress intolerance and physical inactivity. The sum of these changes can result in muscle fatigue and impact on the performance of activities of daily living (ADL). Objectives: To evaluate the association between peripheral muscle fatigue, ADL performance and respiratory muscle strength in individuals with COPD, and to compare healthy individuals matched by age. Methods: Individuals diagnosed with COPD and healthy volunteers were recruited, who performed peripheral muscle fatigue assessments, by surface electromyography, ADL performance, by Glittre's ADL test and respiratory muscle strength. Results: 19 individuals were evaluated, 9 diagnosed with COPD and 10 healthy, who had a quadriceps isometric contraction time of 71.1 ± 26.4 and 67.4 ± 31.2 seconds, respectively, performed the ADL test in 6.9 ± 2.9 and 3.79 ± 0.7 minutes, with a significant difference between groups (p <0.05), and had preserved respiratory muscle strength. However, there was no significant correlation between the evaluations performed. Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, it is possible to conclude that there is no association between quadriceps muscle fatigue, ADL performance and respiratory muscle strength in individuals with COPD. In the comparison between the groups, the COPD group showed lower functional capacity and lower values of respiratory muscle strength, but there was no significant difference in quadriceps muscle fatigue

A somatória dessas alterações pode acarretar em fadiga muscular e impactar na execução de atividades de vida diária (AVD). Objetivos: Avaliar a associação entre fadiga muscular periférica, o desempenho de AVD e a força muscular respiratória de indivíduos com DPOC, e comparar a indivíduos saudáveis pareados por idade. Métodos: Foram recrutados indivíduos com diagnóstico de DPOC e voluntários saudáveis, que realizaram avaliações de fadiga muscular periférica, por eletromiografia de superfície, desempenho em AVD, pelo teste de AVD de Glittre e força muscular respiratória. Resultados: Foram avaliados 19 indivíduos, 9 com diagnóstico de DPOC e 10 saudáveis, que apresentaram tempo de contração isométrica de quadríceps de 71,1±26,4 e 67,4±31,2 segundos, respectivamente, executaram o teste de AVD em 6,9±2,9 e 3,79±0,7 minutos, com diferença significante entre os grupos (p < 0,05), e apresentaram força muscular respiratória preservada. Entretanto, não foi observada correlação significativa entre as avaliações realizadas. Conclusão: Com base nos resultados deste estudo, é possível concluir que não há associação entre a fadiga muscular de quadríceps, o desempenho de AVD e a força muscular respiratória em indivíduos com DPOC.
