Resumo: Doctors have lost the holistic view of the human being, undermining the doctor-patient relationship, which is the ethical and human foundation of the Hippocratic Medicine. The extraordinary technological advances in the field of disease diagnosis and treatment in the postmodern age have changed the healthcare industry’s work approach. These advances have transformed the empirical medicine into evidence-based scientific medicine. They also have changed medicine focus from a taking care-based model to another one based on technology, oriented towards disease cure. The objective of this study is to investigate the role of spirituality and religiosity in the relationship between doctor and family members of patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. This is a descriptive, exploratory study, with a qualitative approach. Nine doctors and ten family members of patients admitted to the adult Intensive Care Unit took part in this research, conducted in a teaching hospital located in the interior of São Paulo state. The data was collected through oral interview, recorded in audio, with the use of a semi-structured questionnaire. The interviews were analyzed with the Content Analysis method under the thematic modality. Results show that the approach of the spirituality/religiosity theme is important for the doctor-patient-family approximation. Besides, this approach comforts the family when others medicine resources deplete. Family members wish the doctor would take this approach, but only a few doctors take this kind of initiative, leaving it mostly to the family. Some family members believe that the doctor does not approach this theme because he is not spiritualized, or he is afraid of the patient or patient’s family reaction, or maybe he just does not have the time for it. But patients’ family members consider that it is essential that the doctor recognizes the importance of spiritual values, that he knows the family’s beliefs and that he has technical preparation for this approach. To the families, spirituality/religiosity helps facing the disease and prayer is a spiritual way of taking care. Even though most doctors consider the theme important, they do not feel prepared to approach it and they also highlight the necessity of receiving this kind of training during graduation

Os extraordinários avanços tecnológicos no campo do diagnóstico e tratamento das doenças na era pós-moderna mudaram o modo de trabalhar na área da saúde. Transformou a Medicina empírica em Medicina científica e baseada em evidências. Esses avanços mudaram o foco da Medicina de um modelo de cuidar para um modelo tecnológico, orientado para a cura da doença. Este trabalho tem como objetivo investigar o papel da espiritualidade/religiosidade na relação dos médicos e familiares dos pacientes internados na Unidade de Terapia Intensiva. Trata-se de estudo descritivo, exploratório, de abordagem qualitativa. Os participantes da pesquisa foram nove médicos e dez familiares de pacientes internados em uma UTI adulto, de um hospital de ensino localizado do interior do estado de São Paulo. Os dados foram obtidos por meio de entrevista oral, gravada em áudio, norteada por perguntas semiestruturadas. As entrevistas foram analisadas utilizando-se o método de Análise de Conteúdo – modalidade temática. Os resultados mostraram que a abordagem do tema espiritualidade/religiosidade é importante para a aproximação médico-paciente-família, conforta quando os recursos da Medicina esgotam, os familiares desejam que o médico aborde esse assunto, porém poucos têm essa iniciativa, deixando-a para a família. Alguns familiares acreditam que o médico não aborda o tema porque ele não é espiritualizado, ou teme a reação do paciente-família, ou não tem tempo para isso. Mas consideram que é essencial que o médico reconheça a importância dos valores espirituais, conheça as crenças da família e tenha preparo técnico para essa abordagem. Para as famílias a espiritualidade/religiosidade ajuda no enfrentamento da doença, a oração é um cuidado espiritual. Embora a maioria dos médicos considere o tema importante, eles não se sentem preparados para isso e apontam a necessidade de o médico receber essa formação no curso de graduaçãoapplication/pdfhttp://tede2.pucsp.br/tede/retrieve/45143/Sueko%20Nakazone.pdf.jpgporPontifícia Universidade Católica de São PauloPrograma de Estudos Pós-Graduados em Educação nas Profissões da SaúdePUC-SPBrasilFaculdade de Ciências Médicas e da SaúdeEspiritualidadeReligiãoUnidade de Terapia IntensivaEducação médicaSpiritualityReligionIntensive Care UnitMedical educationCNPQ::CIENCIAS DA SAUDEImportância da espiritualidade e religiosidade na relação médico-familiares de pacientes na Unidade de Terapia IntensivaThe importance of spirituality and religiosity in the relationship between doctor and family members of patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unitinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/masterThesisinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessreponame:Biblioteca Digital de Teses e Dissertações da PUC_SPinstname:Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo (PUC-SP)instacron:PUC_SPTEXTSueko Nakazone.pdf.txtSueko Nakazone.pdf.txtExtracted texttext/plain211577https://repositorio.pucsp.br/xmlui/bitstream/handle/20965/4/Sueko%20Nakazone.pdf.txt44fc9a22fa515c5686ea70b3ab78bf5fMD54LICENSElicense.txtlicense.txttext/plain;
