A relação conflituosa entre médicos e enfermeiras no contexto hospitalar

The present paper aims at understanding the relationships between physicians and nurses in the hospital environment. Power relationships are discussed in this particular environment, where, due to the classical pattern most hospitals follow, tension and dispute between professional categories take place. We chose to work the relationships between medical and nursing staffs because we understand that such relationships themselves are classical and they point to aspects that are pertinent to social structure, to work relationships, and to cultural values. In other words, though these relationships are delimited, their analysis enables us to go beyond them, bringing into light some aspects of our socio-cultural reality. Based on this relationship, some aspects were seen as relevant. Thus, gender (male / female) was one of the subjects discussed regarding both professions: nursing and medicine. The nursing career has women as the majority of professionals; though physicians can be both male and female, the medicine profession still keeps a male face which is explicit even in terms of language: in Portuguese, the phrase as enfermeiras uses a feminine definite article and noun ending, while in os médicos the masculine definite article and masculine ending are used. We also point out to the problem of socioeconomic differences, for they trigger new restrictions regarding the possibility of access to specific courses in Brazil. Finally, we approached social representations as capable of determining behaviors, and in the case studied, they play the important role of keeping the value connected to those professions. The interviews with physicians and nurses bring to light the tension field where changes and permanence are in conflict. We started from the assumption that in order to understand the relationships between those two professional categories we have to take into account aspects such as hospital organization and Brazilian social structure, which has gender and class at the base of its social formation, as well as aspects of the history of those professions. This work was part of an interdisciplinary field, and we finished it making some propositions regarding closer attention to health in general
