The goal of the ironic framework is an implicit delivery assessment and an invitation to the reader / audience to share the ironist's perspective, which makes irony especially suitable for the task of expressing criticism. The objective of this master's dissertation is the analysis of irony that extends over the dialogues between father and son, in Machado de Assis's Teoria do Medalhão, to understand how the author psychologically constructs his characters and, thus, through them, to take a critical look at the customs, behaviors and society of its time. The work touches on universal themes such as: prejudice, hypocrisy, social conventions, jealousy, greed, usury and appearance over essence. In this context, apart from the fact that a text reconstructs a certain version of reality, structural aspects can be seen as a discreet transformer from one style to another, by feeding the creation of a global, dominant metaphor. This pervasive and diffuse metaphor ensures understanding of the text within a certain ideological perspective, thanks to metaphorical expressions, that is, metonymy, which makes it possible to recover the content present in the reader's frame. The research is based on Systemic-Functional Linguistics (LSF) and the theory of metaphor. The analysis shows that the lexico-grammatical choices of the text do not correspond to the underlying ideology in the macrostructure of the discourse, being, on the contrary, inverted, thanks to the role of irony. This implicit content is recovered thanks to the metaphor that leads to understanding, based on metaphorical expressions - the frame provided by metonymy - that enables the relationship between what is said and what the socio-cognitive context suggests
