Resumo: The present study aimed at investigating the use of evaluative resources in experimental research article abstracts in medicine, and how these resources help the writers persuade their readers of the truthfulness and validity of their research. The study was based mainly on the Systemic-Functional Grammar (Halliday, 1994), according to which language is a semiotic system, where each linguistic choice has meaning and reflects the speaker s social activities. Within this framework, the study follows the concept of evaluation proposed by Thompson and Hunston (2000), to whom this linguistic phenomenon comprehends both modality and attitudinal language. More specifically, I based my analysis on Hunston s model of evaluation in scientific writing (1993, 1994). Finally, I sought support for my analysis in the hedging theory, particularly in the ideas of Salager-Meyer (1994) and Hyland (1996). Besides the linguistic theories highlighted above, this study was guided by the ideas of Latour (1987) and Bazerman (2000) about persuasion in science. The corpus of the study consisted of 50 research article abstracts in medicine, written in Portuguese and published in the SciELO online database of scientific journals. The results of the analysis seem to confirm Hunston s (1993, 1994) theory, according to which in scientific texts evaluation is expressed through the objective linguistic elements, and also Latour s (1987) and Bazerman s (2000) assertions that, in science, persuasion is obtained through evidence that proves the accuracy and reliability of the researched reported. Besides, an apparent paradox revealed by the analysis of implicit evaluation in the abstracts points towards a possible transition, in medical research reports, from a positivist paradigm to another, more qualitative and humanistic one

Besides, an apparent paradox revealed by the analysis of implicit evaluation in the abstracts points towards a possible transition, in medical research reports, from a positivist paradigm to another, more qualitative and humanistic oneO presente trabalho teve por objetivo estudar a utilização de recursos lingüísticos avaliativos em abstracts de artigos de pesquisa experimental em medicina, e verificar de que maneira esses recursos auxiliam os escritores dos abstracts a persuadirem seus leitores da veracidade e validade de suas pesquisas. O principal arcabouço teórico que norteou o estudo foi a Gramática Sistêmico-Funcional (Halliday, 1994), segundo a qual a língua é um sistema semiótico, no qual cada escolha lingüística tem significado e reflete as atividades sociais do emissor. Dentro dessa orientação, este estudo segue a visão de Thompson e Hunston (2000) a respeito da avaliação, segundo a qual esse fenômeno lingüístico abrange a modalidade e a linguagem atitudinal, e possui três funções distintas, porém não exclusivas: expressar a opinião do falante ou escritor e, ao fazê-lo, refletir o sistema de valores deste e de sua comunidade; construir e manter relações entre o falante ou escritor e o ouvinte/leitor, que inclui sua função persuasiva; e organizar o discurso. Mais especificamente, baseei minha análise no modelo de avaliação no discurso científico de Hunston (1993, 1994), que defende a noção de que nesse tipo de discurso a persuasão se dá por meio de avaliações implícitas que refletem a ideologia da disciplina na qual o texto se insere. Finalmente, busquei apoio na teoria do hedging, ou modalidade no discurso científico, principalmente nas idéias de Salager-Meyer (1994) e Hyland (1996). Além das teorias lingüísticas mencionadas acima, este estudo foi norteado pelas idéias de Latour (1987) e Bazerman (2000) acerca do processo de persuasão na ciência. O corpus de estudo foi composto de 50 abstracts de artigos de pesquisa médicos, escritos em português e publicados no portal de periódicos online SciELO. Os resultados da análise parecem confirmar as teorias de Hunston (1993, 1994), segundo a qual nos textos científicos a avaliação se dá através de elementos lingüísticos objetivos, e de Latour (1987) e Bazerman (2000), de que a persuasão na ciência é obtida através de evidências que comprovam a exatidão e a confiabilidade da pesquisa sendo relatada.
