This Masters thesis had as its objective to study the implementation process for the National Humanization Policy for the Federal healthcare system HumanizaSUS, on the Emergency Service of the University of São Paulo Medical School s Hospital das Clinicas Teaching Hospital. The aim was to gain knowledge of and analyze the meaning of this Policy in the perceptions of the former coordinators of the Committee for Humanization, the coordinator of Hospitality, and the professional team of the Emergency Service. The hypothesis was established that the HumanizaSUS program on the Emergency Service is being implemented gradually and partially, although it reveals favorable potential as a permanent process, and the aim is to consolidate it. The methodology was comprised of bibliographical research, documentary research, qualitative field research, and participative observation by the researcher. The methodological technique of oral histories was used, employing semi-structured interviews based on a script with 9 subjects. For analyzing the data obtained, the technique of content analysis was used. The reference concepts chosen were Health, Humanization, Urgency and Emergency, and Culture. The results indicated that the implementation of the National Humanization Policy is recent at Hospital das Clinicas, with different institutional limits and challenges for its implementation on a day-to-day basis. However, professional practices on the Emergency Service have sought to achieve especially the values of a welcoming attitude, respect for users as whole people, and the development of professional coresponsibility in the provision of health care. As regards the Social Services staff, their efforts and contribution to all aspects relating to respect for the right to health care and citizenship of SUS users was noted
