Resumo: This study investigated the knowledge that 36 students of the 4th grade of the Elementary School, of State School of the city of Santos SP, with ages between ten and eleven year old, they had about the representation of the three-dimensional space in the plan. For our investigation we elaborated an instrument diagnostic, considering activities from Piaget s and Inhelder s researches (1993) on the child s space representation. That instrument was applied individually for each child in two meetings of approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. Results indicate that these children presented great difficulty to interpret and to represent in the three-dimensional objects appropriately in the plan. A possible verified cause by the gap the learning of spatial geometry focusing the aspects of the visualization and of the representation of objects that should start in the very first grades of Elementary School

Para nossa investigação elaboramos um instrumento diagnóstico, que envolveu atividades adaptadas das pesquisas de Piaget e Inhelder (1993) sobre a representação do espaço para a criança. Esse instrumento foi aplicado individualmente para cada criança em dois encontros de aproximadamente 1 hora e 30 minutos. Os resultados indicam que essas crianças apresentam dificuldades de interpretar e representar adequadamente os objetos tridimensionais no plano.
