Resumo: This study aims to analyze the current debate held on indicators of sustainable development. The debate began at the end of the 60s and early 70s, when several articles highlighting the problems of economic growth began to appear with more emphasis. The criticism about careless growth also led to attacks against its main indicator, the Gross Domestic Product. Both negative impacts on current welfare and future environmental problems were raised. However, only almost 20 years later the debate returned emphatically, along with several proposals for alternative progress indicators. The presentation of the discussion will be structured in four parts, the first chapter dedicated to examining the debate over different approaches to the idea of sustainable development. The second chapter contains a brief history of the debate on progress indicators. Also, the problems of GDP and the possible solutions for the measurement of economic welfare will be further discussed. Finally, the third and fourth chapters present the discussion held on indicators of quality of life and sustainability, respectively. Given the large methodological differences between the lines of study of sustainable development, as well as significant challenges in terms of methodology in the development of indicators, it appears that a consensus, while important, is far from being conquered

O debate teve início a partir do final da década de 60 e início da década de 70, quando diversos artigos destacando os problemas do crescimento econômico começaram a aparecer com maior destaque. A crítica ao crescimento descuidado levou a ataques contra o seu principal indicador, o Produto Interno Bruto. Tanto impactos negativos no bem-estar atual, como problemas ambientais futuros, foram levantados. No entanto, somente quase 20 anos depois é que o debate retomou com força, juntamente com várias propostas de indicadores de progresso alternativos. A apresentação da discussão será estruturada em quatro partes, sendo o primeiro capítulo dedicado a analisar o debate sobre as diferentes abordagens da ideia de desenvolvimento sustentável. No segundo capítulo será apresentado um breve histórico do debate sobre os indicadores de progresso. Além disso, será aprofundada a discussão sobre os problemas do PIB e as possíveis soluções para a medição do bem-estar econômico. Finalmente, o terceiro e quarto capítulos apresentam a discussão realizada em torno dos indicadores de qualidade de vida e de sustentabilidade, respectivamente.
