Resumo: Boric acid (BA) displays anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, acting on the immune response and participating in osteogenesis. It is often administered orally or locally in clinical and pre-clinical studies. The removal of upper incisors from rats is an excellent experimental model for alveoli studies, such as bone repair and pathological conditions investigations. This thesis unites three scientific manuscripts. The first describes and illustrates, using a recorded video, the dental extraction technique, and the possible use of these alveoli in Wistar rats. The second manuscript is a pre-clinical investigation of the effect of BA in alveolitis. The local application of BA (0.75%) aimed to investigate the antibacterial action of this substance and its participation in the alveolar bone repair through microCT and histological analyses. The study was conducted in Wistar male rats submitted to an upper right incisor extraction and divided into two treatment groups: with or without the BA local application. During follow-up, the antibacterial effect of BA was evaluated throughout 14 days, and bone repair was analyzed in 14 and 28 days of the experiment. The third manuscript analyzes bone healing in Wistar rats submitted to dental extraction and filling of the socket with BA, bone graft, and an association of BA + bone graft in 28 days post-intervention. With the micro-CT and descriptive histology analyses, it was able to describe the bone healing of a dental socket when exposed to this boronderived compound. At the first manuscript, it was possible to confirm the feasibility of this experimental model for bone repair and alveolitis studies. Regarding the second manuscript, BA demonstrated an antibacterial effect on total aerobic and facultative bacteria but failed to benefit bone remodeling in the evaluated time points. And, the third manuscript failed to verify significant differences in alveolar bone healing when using pure BA or in association with bone graft; regardless of the suggested inflammatory process in the groups exposed to the substance.

A utiliza??o de alv?olos de incisivos superiores de ratos ? um excelente modelo experimental para investiga??o pr?-cl?nica do reparo ?sseo e de situa??es patol?gicas. A presente tese re?ne tr?s artigos cient?ficos. O primeiro estudo descreve em um manuscrito e ilustra por meio de um v?deo a t?cnica de extra??o dent?ria e as possibilidades de utiliza??o dos alv?olos de incisivos superiores de ratos Wistar. O segundo estudo ? composto por um experimento em ratos submetidos a extra??o dent?ria e indu??o de alveolite. A aplica??o local do ?cido b?rico (0.75%) buscou investigar a a??o antimicrobiana dessa subst?ncia por meio da an?lise microbiol?gica e sua participa??o no reparo ?sseo alveolar atrav?s das an?lises de micro-CT e histologia. O estudo foi conduzido em ratos Wistar machos submetidos a extra??o dent?ria do incisivo superior direito e divididos nos grupos alveolite e alveolite + ?cido b?rico. Durante per?odo de acompanhamento analisou-se o efeito antimicrobiano do AB e sua participa??o no reparo ?sseo em 14 e 28 dias. O terceiro estudo analisa o reparo ?sseo em ratos Wistar submetidos a extra??o dent?ria e preenchimento alveolar com AB, enxerto ?sseo e a associa??o de AB + enxerto ?sseo ap?s 28 dias. Utilizando an?lise de micro-CT e histologia descritiva foi poss?vel caracterizar o reparo ?sseo alveolar quando exposto ? subst?ncia estudada. Constatou-se atrav?s do primeiro trabalho a viabilidade da utiliza??o desse modelo experimental para estudo do reparo alveolar e na simula??o de alveolite. A partir do segundo artigo foi poss?vel constatar que o AB demonstrou a??o antimicrobiana sobre bact?rias aer?bicas totais e facultativas, mas n?o favoreceu o processo de reparo nos diferentes tempos observados. E, com o terceiro estudo n?o foi poss?vel constatar diferen?as significativas no reparo ?sseo alveolar quando se utilizou o preenchimento com AB puro ou associado a enxerto ?sseo.
