Resumo: This dissertation investigates the causal relationship between labor productivity and average real wage in Brazil in the 1955-2017 period. The data used were obtained from Miebach and Marquetti (2021). The theoretical conception starts from a Classical-Marxian perspective that sees the increase in the cost of labor as a powerful force in inducing increases in labor productivity. The results obtained in the econometric tests suggest that labor productivity Granger causes the real average wage in the Brazilian economy. One possible explanation is the role that the minimum wage, regulated by law, has in determining wages in the Brazilian economy. Several governments had used labor productivity to establish the minimum wage.
