Resumo: Introduction: The purpose of this study was to to evaluate the effects of the intraoral aging on the stainless steel (SS) archwire surface and the effects of four methods of archwire cleaning on the variables of debris, roughness, and friction during sliding mechanics. Methods: Seventeen segments of as-received 0.019 ? 0.025 inch SS archwire, without bends, was designated as C- group, while 85 segments of 0.019 ? 0.025 inch SS archwire were removed from the intraoral environment after four weeks of exposure. These retrieved segments were divided into 5 groups of 17 segments each: C+ (clinical use control group), T1 (sodium bicarbonate jet cleaning), T2 (77oGL alcohol soaked gauze cleaning), T3(ultrasound cleaning) and T4 (steel wool sponge cleaning).The debris level of all those 6 groups were observed by scanning electron microscopy. The Ra was evaluated with a rugosimeter and frictional force was evaluated by the displacement of the segments through the bracket slots assembled in the universal testing machine. The plate containing the bracktes was attached in the machine upper grip to slide at a speed of 5 mm/minute for a distance of 5 mm. Data were analyzed by ANOVA, Student s t-test, Mann-Whitney and Student-Newman-Keuls tests, with &#945;=0,05. Results: The debris of C+ (mean score 2) group increased significantly (p<0.001) in comparison to C- (mean score 0). After the cleaning procedures, only the T2 (p<0.05) and T4 (p<0.01) groups, both with mean score 1, showed significantly decrease in the debris scores. The Ra analysis showed that C+ (mean 0,41&#956;m) group had an increase (p<0.001) in Ra level in comparison to C- (mean 0,18&#956;m), while only the T4 group (mean 0,25&#956;m) showed a decrease after cleaning method in comparison to C+ (p<0.05). The frictional force levels did not show significant difference between C- (mean 6,90N) and C+ (mean 7,89N) groups (p>0.05) and between C+ and T1 (mean 5,73N), T2 (mean 9,49N), T3 (mean 8,56N) and T4 (mean 9,09N) groups (p>0.05). Conclusions: The debris and Ra of SS rectangular wires increased significantly during clinical use, however without causing a significant increase in the frictional force level. The alcohol soaked gauze and the steel wool sponge cleaning methods promoted a significant decrease in the debris scores of retrieved archwires, while the roughness of these archwires decreased only with the steel wool sponge cleaning method. The resistance to sliding of retrieved archwires was not affected by any of the four cleaning methods.

Materiais e m?todos: Dezessete segmentos de arcos retangulares 0,019 x0,025 , sem dobras, rec?m removidos da embalagem, foram denominados Grupo C- (controle novo), enquanto 85 segmentos de arcos retangulares 0,019 x0,025 , sem dobras, foram removidos do meio bucal ap?s a perman?ncia de quatro semanas. Essa metodologia foi analisada e aprovada pela Comiss?o Cient?fica e de ?tica da Faculdade de Odontotologia (CCEFO-PUCRS) e ao Comit? de ?tica em Pesquisa (CEP-PUCRS). Esses segmentos expostos ao meio bucal foram divididos em cinco grupos contendo 17 segmentos cada: C+ (controle exposto), T1 (limpeza com jato de bicarbonato de s?dio); T2 (limpeza com gaze embebida em ?lcool 77?GL); T3 (limpeza em cuba ultrass?nica com detergente enzim?tico); T4 (limpeza de fric??o com esponja de a?o). Todos os seis grupos foram submetidos ? an?lise de debris em microsc?pio eletr?nico de varredura, em magnifica??o 200x. A rugosidade superficial (Ra) foi analisada atrav?s de rugos?metro, enquanto, para verifica??o da fric??o, os segmentos foram ligados com ligaduras el?sticas ? br?quetes colados em placas de acr?lico. Essa placas foram adaptadas ? m?quina de teste universal, e os segmentos tracionados em velocidade constante de 5mm/min por 5mm. Os dados foram analisados atrav?s dos testes estat?sticos de ANOVA, Teste T de Student, Mann-Whitney e Student-Newman-Keuls, com &#945;=0,05. Resultados: A an?lise de debris superficiais mostrou que os arcos do grupo C- apresentaram ?ndice 0, enquanto o grupo C+ apresentaram uma m?dia de ?ndice 2, e portanto um aumento significativo (p<0,001) na quantidade de debris aderidos na magnifica??o 200x. Apenas os grupos T2 (p<0,05) e T4 (p<0,01), ambos com uma m?dia de n?vel 1 de debris, apresentaram uma redu??o significativa em compara??o com C+. Em rela??o ? Ra, o grupo C+, com m?dia de 0,41&#956;m, apresentou aumento significativo em rela??o a C-, com m?dia de 0,18&#956;m (p<0,001). Apenas o grupo T4, m?dia de 0,25&#956;m, mostrou um redu??o significativa em compara??o ao C+ (p<0,05). A an?lise friccional revelou n?o haver diferen?a significativa (p>0,05) entre os grupos C- (m?dia de 6,90N) e C+ (m?dia de 7,89N), assim como entre os grupos C+ e T1 (m?dia de 5,73N), T2 (m?dia de 9,49N), T3 (m?dia de 8,56N) e T4 (m?dia de 9,09N) (p>0,05). Conclus?es: Os arcos retangulares de a?o inoxid?vel expostos ao meio intraoral por 4 semanas apresentaram um aumento na quantidade de debris aderidos e da rugosidade superficial, entretanto sem afetar a resist?ncia friccional ao deslizamento. A limpeza dos arcos envelhecidos com gaze embebida em ?lcool e por fric??o de esponja de a?o promoveram a redu??o significativa no ?ndice de debris; entretanto, a redu??o da rugosidade superficial ocorreu apenas pela limpeza com a esponja de a?o.
