Resumo: The genus Melocactus (Cactaceae) has 37 species, of these 11 are endemic to Bahia. As an alternative to conservation of this genus, studies are needed regarding the behavior of these species, whereas nine species are endangered. Seed storage is a method of conservation which aims to preserve the physical and physiological quality of seeds. The objective of this study was to evaluate the best storage condition for up to 24 months of the seeds of M. ernestii, M. glaucescens and M. xalbicephalus. For this purpose, seeds were exposed to different conditions: refrigerator and room temperature, presence and absence of silica and paper packaging in impermeable containers of glass. For analysis of seed germination, seeds were sterilized in 2.5% NaOCl for 10 minutes and washed three times in distilled water. These were sown in Petri dishes containing germitest paper and maintained in a growth chamber at 25 ? 3 ? C and a photoperiod of 16 hours. We used an entirely randomized design with four repetitions of 25 seeds and germination assessments were daily for 21 days after sowing considering as germinated the radicle emission. We assessed the relative frequency of germination, germinability, germination speed rate, average time of germination and germination uniformity coefficient. We also examined the content of the seed humidity and as for conditioning the seed feasibility was evaluated by tetrazolium test in the control and after 6 months of storage. After 24 months the seeds of M. ernestii remained feasible when placed at room temperature in the absence of silica and refrigerator in the presence of silica. For storage of M. ernestii, M. glaucescens and M. xalbicephalus for up to six months the conditioning in room temperature in the presence of silica showed the best results.

Como alternativa para conserva??o deste g?nero, s?o necess?rios estudos sobre o armazenamento das sementes dessas esp?cies, visto que nove esp?cies est?o em risco de extin??o. O armazenamento de sementes ? um m?todo de conserva??o que tem como finalidade preservar a qualidade f?sica e fisiol?gica das sementes. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a melhor condi??o de armazenamento, por at? 24 meses, das sementes de M. ernestii, M. glaucescens e M. xalbicephalus. Para tanto, as sementes foram submetidas a diferentes condi??es: geladeira e temperatura ambiente; presen?a e aus?ncia de s?lica e embalagem de papel em recipientes imperme?veis de vidro. Para an?lise da germina??o, as sementes foram desinfestadas em NaOCl a 2,5% por 10 minutos e lavadas tr?s vezes em ?gua destilada. Estas foram semeadas em placas de Petri contendo papel germitest e mantidas em sala de crescimento a 25 ? 3?C e fotoper?odo de 16 horas. Utilizou-se delineamento inteiramente casualizado com 4 repeti??es de 25 sementes e as avalia??es da germina??o foram di?rias durante 21 dias ap?s semeadura considerando como germinadas a emiss?o da rad?cula. Foram avaliados freq??ncia relativa da germina??o, germinabilidade, ?ndice de velocidade da germina??o, tempo m?dio da germina??o e coeficiente de uniformidade da germina??o. Analisou-se tamb?m o teor de umidade das sementes e para o acondicionamento por seis meses foi avaliada a viabilidade das sementes pelo teste de tetraz?lio no controle e ap?s seis meses de armazenamento. Ap?s 24 meses as sementes de M. ernestii se mantiveram vi?veis quando acondicionadas em temperatura ambiente na aus?ncia de s?lica e em geladeira na presen?a de s?lica.
