Since the foundation of Berlin Institute, the first service in which psychoanalysts took care of the neurotics from the war, psychoanalysis is not something that happens only in a private practice. The application of psychoanalysis occurs in different institutions and the general hospital is one of them. Therefore, this study is the result of a research that took place during the probation work that was part of the curriculum of the post graduation in Health Psychology of Instituto Central do Hospital das Clínicas de São Paulo. Besides, there is here our experience as researcher of the same institute. Thus, assistance in the Emergency Room, in Intensive Care Units, ambulatory assistance, discussion of the clinical cases and the work with multiprofessional team are described in this dissertation, in an attempt to follow the Freudian suggestion that in Psychoanalysis assistance and research are the same. The main aim of this study was to talk about the possibilities and the limits of an analyst work in a general hospital, taking into account Lacan s idea that every discourse has in its structure the mark of Real, in other words, the impossible of coincide its production with the truth, which is always not total. So we emphasize the necessity of a return that every psychoanalyst to the foundations of Freudian theory and technic so as he can not only enter but be insert in the multiprofessional team. Futhermore, taking into consideration Jacques Lacan s four discourses theory, we differentiate the ethics of psychoanalysis from Aristotle s ethics and the ethics influenced by capitalism. This will be important to emphasize that the limits of the psychoanalyst s work in a general hospital are more ethical than bureaucratic. Besides, taking into consideration evaluation as one of the main effects of the capitalist discourse in the hospital, we discuss the meaning of the significant efficiency for psychoanalysis, as we differentiate symbolic efficiency from the psychoanalytical one. Finally we emphasize that the specifications of the analyst s work in the hospital is more connected to the method rather than to the theory and, therefore, we propose the subjective localization as what is possible as far as the preliminary interviews are concerned
