In the first phase of Brazilian redemocratization, there has been a broad consensus on the way social question should be dealt with: by imposing restrictions to capitalism through the expansion of the wage earning society . The research topic of this dissertation is the decline of such a project: instead of a deficit of protections , social issue has progressively been framed as a deficit of agent's requirements to properly compete in the marketplace. The main contribution of this dissertation is the following: it is only be possible to explain the replacement of one narrative by the other through the investigation of the new ways to assign values to the capital, which have contributed to erode cognitive conventions that used to support the critique of capitalism. In chapters one and two, we seek to describe the extent and radicality of critical statements that proliferated during redemocratization. I find that reactions against dictatorship have had a dual basis: the cultural renewal (that I name autonomist activism ) and the reinvention of the social , in which the critique of the past was merely "corrective" as it left labor protection in the center of the analysis. At the end of the second chapter, we seek to explain that the social criticism would have cooled down when deregulation practices came to be justified with the same lexicon that had been used to disqualify Dictatorship and "populist" tradition. Chapter three tries aims to explain three processes of "displacement of capital" that were decisive crucial to the decadence of old regulations in Brazil: public debt, "networking exploitation" (using the automotive sector as a case study) and inflation. The fourth chapter deals with the proliferation of non-earning salaries occupations as a product of the context of aversion to hierarchies and dependencies (typical of a recent democracy), but highlighting the fact that the pursuit of selfentrepreneurship ended up bring in terms of legitimizing a capitalism of free of collective regulations. In short, this dissertation points to the decline of the experience of "extended working class" that had been created in the period of redemocratization, a phenomenon that would induce the weakening of social criticism towards the potential evils effects of labor competition and commodification of social life.
