This paper analyzes journalism based on the policy cycle approach (BOWE, BALL, GOLD, 1992), a method proposed, until then, in research on education and public policy, with the objective of introducing it as a theoretical reference and methodological basis. for research in Communication. For this, it starts from the premises that the journalist is one of the actors that interfere in the policy cycle; its performance occurs and impacts all five contexts of the cycle - influence, text production, practice, results (effects) and political strategy -; and one who works producing news in the media, press relations, content production and management of networks and social media should be considered as a journalist, given his participation in the information process of society. Thus, through hypothetical research and systematic observation, the hypotheses that once a professional is active, the journalist is a political actor insofar as his work is part of the five contexts of the cycle; and that not all professionals consider the political character of their actions, enriched by a qualitative approach that allows them to explore the individual perspectives of the subjects that make up this study. The conclusion seeks to introduce the proposal for a new dialogue from the policy cycle approach applied to Communication and the extent of the practice beyond the news, with perspectives for an interdisciplinary approach to studies in the area.
