This History dissertation aims at demonstrating the close relation between the VARIG s crisis and the paradigm changes of the Brazilian government regarding the civil aviation and the national airlines, since the eighty's decade, by means of the adoption of the neoliberal ideas, which marked the deregulation of the north-american aviation domestic market. Therefore, considering the official adoption by the Brazilian state of the directrixes developed in the USA, was possible to us to associate the study of national aviation s history to the history of the governmental politics regarding the international politics. Therefore we could trace a parallel analysis between the Brazilian and the north-American foreign policy, due to the great influence of this country on the civil aviation development in Brazil, mainly after the Second World War until the neoliberal changes of the late decades. Thus, we could observe how much the North-American foreign policy has succeed in influencing the evolution of the national aviation because of the greater or smaller autonomy from the different Brazilian governments to this specific policy. To be possible demonstrate the relation between the VARIG s crisis and this paradigm change, it was necessary to study the external relations aspects of the company, how much the slogan Big VARIG ( VARIG Follows the big steps of growing Brazil - annex A) , conceived during the period called The Brazilian Miracle , was associated to the nationalist-developmentalist political economy of the Brazilian state, which when went into crisis, unbalanced the VARIG s historical strategy, mainly after the ninety's decade, when the connections between state actors and private economic agents were extremely reduced. Regarding to VARIG, we needed also to analyze its internal relations aspects, built during its more than eighty years of history, with institutional practices very similar to the in state companies. I n the conclusion we will demonstrate the co- responsibility of the Brazilian state on the VARIG s life, the formation, the growth, the beginning of the crisis and during the intensification of its fall process, by means of determinant actings, in different moments of the country s history.
