Resumo: The vertiginous national growth of Pentecostalism followers shows that Brazil is becoming an evangelical country. The image of the country is marked by innumerable signs of public religiosity associated with the evangelical expansion in the 1970s and its social and political impact. Thereby it is evident that the separation between State and Church was never complete in Brazil. However, the place of Catholicism's power in the public waiting room has been given way to neo-Pentecostal religions, which are gaining ever more believers with discourses of prosperity and economic ascension. Neopentecostalism, more precisely the denomination Igreja Universal do Reino de Deus (IURD), causes a change in the relationship between historical evangelicals and politics as it increases the number of evangelical representatives in local, state and federal politics, as well as stimulates visibility of its representatives in the media - these representatives incite their followers against a declared enemy, the afro-brazilian religions. The city of São Gonçalo is located in the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro. Occupies the 4th place among the Brazilian (non-capital) metropolis that have a greater percentage of Pentecostal evangelical denominations in the country. This work aims to demonstrate the afro-religious reactions generated in response to measures of religious intolerance arising from Pentecostalism present in the municipal public sphere.

A imagem do país está marcada por inúmeros indícios de religiosidade pública associados à expansão evangélica na década de 1970 e seu impacto social e político. Dessa forma fica evidente que a separação entre Estado e Igreja nunca foi total no Brasil. Entretanto o lugar de poder do catolicismo na esfera pública vai cedendo espaço para as religiões neopentecostais, que ganham cada vez mais fiéis com discursos de prosperidade e ascensão econômica. O Neopentecostalismo, mais precisamente a denominação Igreja Universal do Reino de Deus (IURD), causa mudança na relação entre os evangélicos históricos e a política na medida em que aumenta o número de representantes evangélicos na política local, estadual e federal, como também estimula a visibilidade de seus representantes na mídia representantes estes que incitam seus fiéis contra um inimigo declarado, as religiões afro-brasileiras. O município de São Gonçalo está inserido na região metropolitana do Rio de Janeiro. A região ocupa o 4º lugar dentre as metrópoles brasileiras (não capitais) que possuem maior percentual de denominações evangélicas pentecostais do país.
