"Continue a nadar": sobre testosterona, envelhecimento e masculinidade

The goal of this work is to explore the reformulation of the old andropause into the diagnostic of Androgenic Deficiency of the Aging Male (ADAM) and its pharmacological treatment, the testosterone replacement. This "new" pathology is located into the range of the Sexual Medicine, and it is part, together with the erectile dysfunction and the premature ejaculation, of an advance of the medicalization towards male bodies. I conducted semistructured interviews with several physicians involved with the stabilization of ADAM. These professionals are urologists or endocrinologists, or yet andrologists, academics, but who also keep a clinic. The interview can be split in two main groups, one about the definition and diagnostic of ADAM, and the centrality of sex in the patient's complaints. The other analyzes the hormone replacement therapy in itself, and the consequences to the masculinity of the testosterone deficiency. I listed yet a third theme, about the disputes between the two medical specialties, and the differences in approach of the given propositions, which masked different conceptions of body and disease. At last, I tried to keep gender and aging as transversal axes that crossed the whole interview. The goal of this interview guide was to perceive, through these physicians' eyes, how ADAM has been built as in the Academy as in the medical clinic, and which ideas lies under its diagnostic and treatment. Therefore, in this work, I intend to analyze how ADAM seems to be at a crossroad, intertwining new ideals of masculinity and aging, under the aegis of the sexual medicine and its pharmacological treatments. But, before that, I had to investigate the changes in masculinity and aging, what defined them before, and which new designs they show nowadays, in order to glimpse their articulation with the medicalization and/or the pharmacologization of the male sexuality.
