This study aims at the nursing undergraduate's perception on the thematic sexual orientation and gender identities and a possible influence on care. The proposal of the National Curricular Guidelines (CND) is to adapt new formative processes with support in skills and competences, breaking with the curricular rigidity, allowing more creative and innovative pedagogical models, articulating theory-practice and demands of public health. In this sense, and with a view to contributing to the nurses' training process, this research aimed to describe the perception of nursing undergraduates about sexual orientation and gender identities and to analyze their perceptions about the training process in relation to the practice of care, considering sexual orientation and gender identities. Research descriptive, exploratory, with qualitative approach. The participants were fifteen students from the last period of the undergraduate nursing course, from a state public college, located in the city of Rio de Janeiro. In the production of the data, the semi-structured interview technique, guided by a pre-elaborated script, was used. For the analysis of the results, the Bardin content analysis technique was used, which allowed the emergence of two categories: a) Nursing undergraduate perceptions about sexual orientation and gender identity; b) The process of training in relation to the practice of care considering the sexual orientations and the gender identities. The results evidenced that the students present some understanding about the subject, but still with many concepts in processings, fact that demonstrates the necessity of a greater approach to the subject. Nursing education is guided by the political pedagogical project and must be shaped according to the DCN, health policies and the reorientation by cross-cutting themes, where knowledge, skills and abilities to solve problems of social relevance and public health will be articulated. The education institution studied, however much it meets the premises of the DCN, the policies that induce the reorientation of health education and the current health system, does not meet in its completeness, since some aspects are still in the process of development. One of the strategic aspects is to promote and / or adapt new paths, to establish care free of prejudices, silences and negligence. The research demonstrates new paradigms, which can be presented as subsidies to some reflections regarding the teaching of sexual orientation themes and gender identities in the training of nurses, making possible changes in the way to take care of the sexual health of the people. Articulating, theory and practice, guaranteeing access to health, recognition and guarantee of social rights, resolution to health demands and establishing links between professional and user. It is possible to consider that with a sexuality disconnected from historical or cultural aspects, the teaching or the lack of it, ends up contributing, even without intention, to the reproduction of heterosexism, homophobia and exclusionary behaviors related to sexuality.
