This study aims to analyze the professional practice of social workers who worked in the management of social assistance policy in the city of Rio de Janeiro, seeking to identify the limits and possibilities for the materialization of the current Ethical-Political Project Critic of Social Work. In order to do so, we considered the tendencies placed in the bosom of neoliberal policies, the reconfigurations in the scope of work in capitalist society and the repercussions of this process on the professional practice of the social worker. In addition, we analyze the profile of the social workers who worked in the social assistance policy as salaried workers, presenting some considerations about the historical significance of the profession and its professional competences. In order to develop our study, we carried out a review of the bibliography on the subject and an empirical research through ten semi-structured interviews with the retired social workers, who worked within the scope of the management in the current Municipal Department of Social Assistance and Human Rights in the City Hall of the city of Rio de Janeiro. We aim to understand the management conception that guided the professional practice of these social workers and their motivations to act in the planning, monitoring and evaluation of the social assistance policy of Rio de Janeiro, studying their discourses and their actions and reflectingcritically on the possibilities and limits of the materialization of the current Ethical-Political Critical Project in professional practice. The study is based on the proposed objectives, aiming to capture the contradictions contained in the professional work of the social worker within the scope of management, taking as reference the Marxist critical-dialectical perspective.
