In this work, we aimed to study the memories of patrimonialization of "viola de cocho" in the cities of Cuiabá -Mato Grosso and Corumbá -Mato Grosso do Sul. To conduct this study we use as theoretical reference the studies of social memory, in particular the discussions developed by Bartlett (1932), Halbwachs (1990), Bosi (1994), Portelli (1997) and Sá (2005). Taking as reference that theoretical approach and seeking a psychosocial understanding of the memories of preservation and patrimonialization on how to make "viola de cocho", we develop the research by document analysis, field observations and interviews on the spot with masters -elderly people representatives of this knowdlegde, young apprentices and people involved with the patrimonialization of this know-how. Revealing the memories of those interviewed was to reveal the personal histories and also collective memories on an interface with the story narrated about the way of how to make "viola de cocho" and the set of social practices associated with it. Each interviewed person, recalling the time lived with this knowledge, made a personal and collective reinterpretation and inscribed their memories in the history of this knowledge while they also reflected the context and history of that knowledge in his memories of life. Through the narratives of the masters, apprentices and persons related to patrimonialization of this knowledge it was possible to know the sense and meanings assigned in different contexts and the experiences lived and translated by the groups in their collective practices. By weaving comparisons between the narratives of the masters and apprentices, it was possible to relate some changes that the traditions and the whole body of knowledge associated to the know-how to make "viola de cocho" had, as well as to relate the social effects of these changes in the ways of being, organizing and living of these groups.
